Le Balcon d'Eloise et son histoire

Prestige & architectural classicism

The estate is composed of old stable, barn and wine cellar as well as sheds, dwelling, various storage facilities and what used to be housing for servants.
The visual aspect of the building refers to architectural classicism which stands out by the rational search for symmetrical compositions. Philosophically, this architecture represents an ideal of order and reason. This ideal goes through the search for a certain balance of the décor and also sobriety.

Noble materials

The three-floor house is made of stones and its basements of rubble stones. The roof is made of tiles.
There are portholes above each opening on the 2nd floor. These portholes allow light to flow up to the 3rd floor. Each opening has an arched stone lintel. There’s a stone cornice separating each level, in which the arched stone lintels are incorporated.

A place filled with history

We must give credit to a certain Mr. De Saint-Germain for the current visual aspect of the lodging who was the commander of the King’s vessel in the port of “Rochefort-sur-Mer”. Following an expedition of his fleet to Rio de Janeiro, he had a horseshoe-shaped staircase built behind the lodging as well as the Louis XIV handrails that make an admirable balcony.

From the 1400’s up to the French Revolution, the St Germain family owned this property. That was the period in which the (Pigeon house, garret, loft, attic) was destroyed (where the current “Coubre” gite is situated), the 378 hectares became a wine plantation for Cognac with its storehouses and its big cooling stones to chill its cognac.

On the « Chemin de Compostelle »

In 1891 the terrain was split between two brothers. One Brother got the stables, the hangars and the cow shed. The other received the vines, the distillation buildings and storehouses. Then, in 1900, phylloxera forced the owners to sell the property.

On the « Chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle » appears « Relais de L’Aiguille ». It is also thought that it was built on an ancient roman site. The property was recently restored with noble materials keeping in mind the local wealth at that time.
